Bees & Bears in Hendersonville

I haven’t had my previous post up very long so if you missed it and would like to see it – waterfall videos  and what happened to Ruby– the link is the first one above.

This is a one day post as this was a long fun day.  Most of it good.  I’ll get the bad over first.   This was the reason I went to Hendersonville today.  But the things added on made it much better.

Not sure I’ve expounded on my cell phone problems among RV, surgery, car and other concerns.  Now that it’s over, I’ll give a wrap up.  Skip down to the rest of the day if you don’t want to read about 3 weeks of problems with Sprint/T-Mobile.

Sprint service down? Soon it'll be gone forever - Ting.com

To begin with, I have two cell phones so that I’ll have a better chance of having service in the out of the way places I tend to prefer.  One phone – the EXPENSIVE one – is Verizon.  Seriously thinking about looking for a minor – cheaper – carrier that uses the Verizon network.  The other was a Sprint phone which unlike Verizon worked at the farm.  With the advent of the T-mobile buy out, the sprint phone was working less and less well.  When I arrived here, it wasn’t working at all.  NO SIGNAL.

I called them.  What a joke.  I’m sorry that I don’t understand Indonesian and Indian accents well enough to kno0w what they said but I did understand ultimately that I would have service if I had a 5G phone.  My current phone was an LG which I had liked as well or better than my Verizon Samsung but Sprint wanted to send me a new phone for free.  Sounded great until I had to spend 16 hours – SERIOUSLY no exaggeration on the phone and internet chat trying to get them to understand that they could not text me a code to authenticate my account as MY PHONE WAS NOT WORKING.

How Do I Cancel My Sprint Service? The next problem once we got that straightened out was that they did not have Riverbend’s address “in their system” and could not send the phone UPS to a place that didn’t exist.  Fed Ex and UPS deliver here every day.  No they could not send it to the UPS/Fed Ex package acceptance store near me.  It had to go to my “home address”. Hours were spent on this.   FINALLY, I went on line, ordered the new Pixel 6 and gave my home address as the package store.  It went through!!!  I called the package store and 4 days later they called me with the phone.

In this scenario I had driven into Brevard, 30 min, so I would have a sprint cell service so I could get the text but for a myriad of reasons you don’t want to hear that wouldn’t work.  The closest real T-mobile store was an hour away in Hendersonville.   I was SICK to death of thick accents on the phone so in order to “authenticate” my new phone I went to the T-mobile store.  They are short staffed and the regional manager from South Carolina was there that day.  Good for me I thought.  Not so much.  He was great at pulling everything off my old phone and onto my new one but apparently if you are a Sprint employee you have to have a special code or something to authenticate to T-Mobile and his only works in South Carolina.  Neither of the two people in this store who have such authorization were in…..sigh…..so it’s back to the phone.    As you can see having two phones was this could happen without my driving daily at least 30 miles.

Customer Service Hell | TIME.com

The next day I did call them to authenticate and when she said she’d have to send me a text to do that I went ballistic.  Screaming that I wanted her supervisor or I would cancel my account and just being absolutely horrid as I was SO out of patience with this now 3 week saga.   Finally got it done and I like the phone.  If you have Sprint or T-mobile I hope you never have to call them.

Now on to the much better rest of the day.  I only spent a half hour in the store which didn’t open until 11am and then headed out for lunch.  That was a rousing success.

Lunch was at The Book and Bee Cafe.   What a great place.
Apropos as my friend Laurie and I had just finished discussing Sue Hubbell's book A Country Year all about her life in the country in Missouri as a single woman bee keeper. What a great place.

Check out the stairs more closely

Inside, this was the hostess stand where I told her a table for one outside.

As you will see from all of my pictures, whoever designed this place did a great job with the many many details.

IMG_0834

The outside porch was lined with wrought iron tables, each with a red umbrella.

These ladies were my neighbors and figure in my story.

IMG_0816

I chose a table around the corner next to the trees and the bees.

IMG_0814

After I placed my order I went inside to check out the rest of the cafe.

Through the far door is another room with a decorated tree.

IMG_0832

This room also had a Jane Austin table and when I went back inside to pay my bill, three women having High Tea in the back far corner.  After this, they told me they were going to the movie theater to see Downton Abbey.   These are my kind of people.  I want to play dress up with them.

There were little touches all over.  I could have spent hours just looking at it all.

How about the three tiered trays filled with tea sandwiches, chocolate dipped cherries, scones and other treats.

The other rooms were as unique.  Look at the pressed tin ceiling.

I want the window seat with the covered chairs.

I had come to order what is called “Afternoon Tea” a pot of tea, 2 scones, lemon curd, strawberry jam and clotted cream.  But after seeing my neighbors delicious looking sandwiches, I decided to have a full lunch AND tea.   It’s no wonder with all the potlucks and breakfasts at Riverbend and now this that I have gained 5 pounds since I’ve been here despite the waterfall hiking.

Lunch AND Tea.
I couldn’t not order a sandwich called The Alchemist which was a meatloaf sandwich with sauerkraut, havarti cheese and “meatloaf sauce”, whatever that is, on sunflower seed bread and a pea salad.

I have a problem with all the tannins in tea so I never drink it but the menu here had two herbal teas and I tried this one called The Hobbit.  Check it out on the menu along with all the others with great names.  The teapot was fantastic and came with a candle warmer and brown sugar cubes with sugar tongs.

Blueberry scones with lemon curd, clotted cream and strawberry jam.  YUM!!

IMG_0820

I ate half the sandwich and all the rest and when my neighbors ordered dessert and I heard coconut cream cake, I ordered a slice of that for dinner tomorrow with my sandwich.   I fairly waddled out of this wonderful place.

I was then off to the downtown of Hendersonville to walk of all that food.

They were having the Bearfootin’ Art Walk auction.  According to the information the Bearfootin’ Bears search for a permanent home each fall as winter nears. Since 2003 the art walk has helped raise funding for downtown Hendersonville and for local non profits.  Local artists transform the bears with creative themes.  Not sure where the bears come from but each is sponsored, the artists donates their art and each bear has a benefit organization.  If the bear auctions off for $3000 or less then the money is split between the organization and downtown Hendersonville.  Those bringing over $3000, all monies go to the organization.  The auction is virtual and begins September 14 closing with a big event on October 15th at the courthouse.

The bears above are called Love Bug sponsored by Troy Drake & Danny Wiley, the artist is Kay Rose Sloat and the money will benefit the nonprofit PFLAG Hendersonville.

One of my favorites all around is below.  I Beg Your Garden is sponsored by 4 Friends of downtown Hendersonville, the artist is Judy Dempsey and it will benefit Bullington Gardens.

There are 20 bears up and down both sides of Main Street.  It was great fun seeing them all.  Though I’m not going to post pictures of all twenty I know you’ll be glad to hear.

IMG_0859

Also while I was downtown I went into this great bakery though given my lunch I didn’t buy a thing.  But look at what they have.  YUM!

Every kind of baked good imaginable

And many of them are gone of course by afternoon.

Several of the shops obviously have bought bears in the past and I saw them as I strolled past the shops.

Not for auction.

The ice cream shop had its own bear standing out front with his giant cone.

IMG_0910

The shop also sells fudge and caramel apples of all sorts made right on the spot.

When I asked about the flavor names which I recognized as towns in Michigan, I was told the company originated there.

But Carl Sandbear is up for auction.  I tribute to the poet whose home is nearby.
It’s sponsored by the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara, the artist is Mike Ayers and it benefits the Friends of Carl Sandburg Scholarship Program

The money from the bears has been put to very good use by the downtown.  It is a lovely and attractive place to visit with greenery and flowers everywhere, outside tables and non restaurant seating.

They haven’t chosen to make their Main Street a mall as my home town did and I actually think I like it better.  It has a more open feel and retains the feeling of a small town downtown.

This very good flutist was busking on one of the many benches.

I’m not much of a shopper and I’m sure you’ve noticed that the only two stores I’ve gone in to at this point are food related.  Good thing I ate such a big lunch.

But I did enjoy strolling by the colorful shops and their windows.

I loved this T-shirt – People in Sleeping Bags ….Are Like Soft Tacos.

IMG_0892

The only non food store I went into in this shopping town was this one.

IMG_0900

It’s huge and full of fun and nostalgia.

IMG_0901

I didn’t stay long as the mass of merchandise was overwhelming.  But here are a couple of things that caught my eye.

IMG_0907

All set for Grandparents.  O.P. Taylor’s Toy Store.

You could also bid on Take The Road Less Traveled Bear – a rival poet.  Sponsored by Burlett Painting, The artist is  Dee Ballenger and it benefits the Hendersonville Family YMCA

IMG_0936

Or Daisy Dogwood sponsored by dogwood of flat rock.  Artist Bethany Joy to benefit St. Gerard House, School for Autism.

In the background is the Henderson County Courthouse with its gold dome.

IMG_0945

I was very taken with the landscape architecture of Hendersonville’s downtown including the graduated low brick walls enclosing the relaxing sitting spaces.

One final note about comments.  I just noticed when I went to reply to a commenter on my previous post that blogger had me as Anonymous as it did several of the comments.  I posted a comment to my reply about that and it listed me as Sherry.  So look at who you are commenting as if it’s usually your name and it comes up as Anonymous, close the comment and try again like I did and perhaps it will work as it’s supposed to.  Who knows what’s going on but thanks for your comments however they show up.

  1. I use Walmart's Straighttalk for a phone, I use the Verizon network and it's $35 a month. They have a $25/month plan too.

    1. Thanks very much for that information Rob. My Verizon phone is too expensive. I would assume that using the Verizon network would be possible traveling all over the country with StraightTalk.

  2. What a lovely post! I thought maybe we were in Hendersonville, but alas we were in Waynesville. Lovely town! Enjoyed the bears, Custer does the same thing but with Buffalo. FYI, we switched from Verizon to Xfinity for our cell plan a few years ago. Dropped from $200/month to $35! They use the same cell towers. We're very happy with it.

    1. Thanks for the info about Xfinity. Can that be used on the road. Glad to hear someone is pleased with a service they have. It's beginning to seem rare

  3. Hi Sherry, It's been awhile since we've communicated, but I'm enjoying reading about your adventures, both good and bad! I've emailed you several times, but have realized I might be using an old email address. I will be in Franklin for a few days this coming week and wondered if you might be interested in getting together. I would enjoy that a lot. I'll send you an email at the address on this blog. I am so glad you are out on the road doing what you love. I also know how hard it is!

  4. Love the picture of the person screaming into the phone- can't blame you after 16 hours with nothing resolved and having to go over the same questions again and again@#$#! The tea place is darling and I love the names of the tea. When I saw that it was called The Book and the Bee, i thought they'd have books also. Coconut cake? Yes, please! I would not have been able to go into the bakery and not purchase something no matter how full I was. The General Store looks like a place where you could spend a long time looking at everything. Old fashioned coke cooler. Did you get cherry or other flavored phosphates at dime store luncheonettes when you were a kid? I love the bears! The Outer Banks did the same thing with horses and Virginia Beach had mermaids. My two favorite bears are the one with the sunflower on his behind and the blue one with the mountains. This looks like a great little town! xxxooo

    1. That person looks just like I did at the end of all the crap with Sprint. You'd have spent hours in the Mast General. I was overwhelmed at all the stuff. Seems lots of tourist places have some animal they decorate. Venice Florida had dolphins I think it was or maybe manatee I forget.

  5. Hi Sherry, I am catching up on your blog. Sorry to read about all the problems you've had, but enjoyed the waterfalls. That is such a beautiful area, a place we have not visited in years.
We have been customers of Ting since 2013 and have been very happy with them.
    https://tingmobile.com/plans
We are on the Flex plan and only pay $25/mo for two phones on the Verizon network. One phone is only $15. If you need a lot of data the price goes up a bit but is very reasonable compared to others. And the best thing is, customer service is a pleasure to deal with (no foreign accents). You can call and talk to them about what you need and they won't try to sell up. They have always been very helpful.
Enjoy the rest of the summer. Hope your problems are behind you!

    1. Gale it is so wonderful to see you in the comments. It's been a long time since we've communicated. Thanks for the link to Ting. I need a phone I can also use as a hotspot and some pretty strong data. I'll check them. At this point I'd switch just to have an american speaker. Customer Service a pleasure seems like a dream. Thanks for you good wishes. Don't be a stranger.

  7. Re A cheaper phone service that uses Verizon network.

I’d mentioned to you once before that a little over a year ago I switched to VISIBLE. To date I have had no problems with the service whatsoever.

Reminder: Join a Party plan after signing up and it costs a flat $25/month for unlimited calls AND data. No hidden fees. And there are savings incentives when you bring someone on board the program.

    Good luck.

  8. Thanks for reminding me. I have a lot of things to check thanks to my commenters. Being on the road, I need to be able to use the phone as a hot spot and not run out of data during the month. Currently for this Verizon is charging a fortune.

    1. Unlimited data and Hotspot. Still only $25/ mo.

    2. We also use Visible. Join a party and it’s $25 a month using PayPal for automatic payments. As good as our Verizon was just cheaper.

  9. We loved Hendersonville! It has such a delightful downtown, as you discovered. But somehow I missed the tea room...so I'm glad you showed me your lovely tea service. As you know, we're actually considering a 'tiny home' community near Hendersonville for our next home.

Your experience with Sprint is ridiculous. I hope that the advice from your readers will turn out to be helpful. We've used Verizon forever, and simply accept paying $175 a month for unlimited coverage for our 2 iPhones and MiFi. It mostly works...when it works...

    1. Did you visit the tiny home community when you were in Hendersonville? I'm going back to visit visit Carl Sandburg's house. Maybe I'll look into it.

  10. Boy do I know about the Sprint/T-Mobile change over. They sent me on a wild goose chase to stores that no longer existed and insisted they were there. Told the guy get in my truck and lets go look, so he finally started calling around and found all the numbers had been disconnected. All of a sudden he could do the change over :( I think it was the look of pure murder on face that changed his mind. I always had Straight Talk and changed to a family plan to help out my daughter with Medro nope didn't last long with that deal. So went to Sprint and then the nightmare began. As soon as Fall comes and the temps drop I will go back and sign up with Straight Talk again.

    1. I had the same experience with they couldn't do this or that and then when I started screaming all of a sudden they could. I'll look into Straight Talk thanks Jo.

  11. Sounds like Sprint/TMobile should be avoided! Such a run around! Glad you got so many good suggestions for a change up. What an adorable town. That cafe and the bears! Love it!! High tea followed by Downtown Abbey sounds fun to me!

    1. I hope it's just Sprint and not T-mobile. Now that I'm over that hurdle we'll see. Wish we could go to the tea room together.

  12. Of course they wanted to text you at a phone that you were calling about not working. It's like they cannot possibly alter from the script they're given. Hope you never have to call them again! Hendersonville looks like heaven to me, especially the amazing teahouse. OMG they did such a great job making it delightful. All the bears are darling, especially the Love Bug ones that are so different from all the others. We've seen towns with bison, horses, seals and maybe one with bears. They're a great addition to all downtowns. Love that they contribute to so many great causes.

  13. If I have to call them again it will be to cancel my service. I'm actually going back to Hendersonville again next week to Carl Sandburg's house and they're really looking forward to it.

  14. Call Verizon and ask for their senior rate. It might get you a better deal. It’s always worth asking!

    1. Another anonymous - what is wrong with blogger? I supposedly have the "senior rate" for all the good that does me.

  15. I so hate dealing with stuff like your phone thing. I use Verizon at a high rate and should check into some of these other suggestions. I've kept them because it works. Hendersonville looks like a cute little berg. I love how you explore the towns, books and food. Grants Pass, OR used to do a bear thing similar to that.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Oh yes, Gaelyn and Sherry. Grants Pass still does the bear thing. They come out on the streets on Memorial Day and go back to the Bear Hotel on Labor Day. You can visit them throughout the off season at the Bear Hotel, a real treat where the 8 foot tall wooden nutcrackers rest until their Christmas duties on the streets. I love our bears so much.

    2. The Grants Pass bears sound wonderful. I think they had dolphins in Venice Florida or Manatee. Seems to be a thing with some towns. Gaelyn, if you check into some of these great phone suggestions, let me know.

  16. We also have Verizon unlimited, 2 phones and all the other bells and whistles. With Mo's military discount it is less than what Laurel has to pay. But once again, I can see the disadvantage of being a party of one navigating the world. I am so sorry, Sherry, that these problems keep following you around. I do hope things ease up a bit. I would have been screaming at that interaction with Sprint as well. Luckily, I haven't had to deal with customer service with our Verizon accounts. We will see how that goes as we travel east. I am a bit concerned how well Verizon will work on the east coast. I thought ATT was better back there, but we can no longer afford to have two phones with two different services. Ugh. Such a pain in the whatever. The waterfalls help a bit, I am sure. The sounds are so lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The waterfalls help a lot Sue. I find Verizon works pretty well on the east coast and haven't had nearly the trouble with it as with Sprint. Hoping this T-mobile thing will be a lot better.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't even want to hear about phones. Always such a hassle and waste of your time. The teahouse was really cute and memorable. Lots of little towns end up being very charming. Glad you're enjoying your travels.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh my gosh, what a sweet town (and not just because of the bakeries/bees/honey/bears imagery!) The tea cafe looks so delicious and playful, both the food and the decor/mood. And I love that they unabashedly highlighted the big romantic proposal speech from Pride and Prejudice!

I also like the fact that it’s not a pedestrian mall, surprisingly, and with all the pretty landscaping the street feels integrated, not divisive. I just love the bears! Favorites are the gentleman holding the ice cream cone, and the last one with the pretty blue and green mountains on her side.

How did your Awesomeness test turn out?— Positive, I bet!
