Spring Brings Changes

One of the things most folks including me like about spring is that everything seems fresh and new.  Nature starts again and so can we.  A  time for new beginnings.  And especially this spring as we get vaccinated and life begins to get back to normal.

IMG_5672At the farm, the grass is greening and growing.  The two old Paulownia Trees in the yard are still blooming.  They were old over 40 years ago when we bought the farm and at this point I probably should cut them down but I just can’t do it.  They are old friends.  The birds are all over them especially the woodpeckers.  So I’ll let the trees decide how many more springs and hope they fall away from the house and I can fix the fence.  But for now their blossoms are lovely and fragrant.  I look forward to them every year.

The azaleas are all in bloom.  We put them in during our early years here.

The Iris are blooming along the road welcoming me as I come into the barnyard.

The deer are wandering through the fields.  They are not making much of a dent in rapidly growing grasses.

The turkey are courting.  The Tom strutting his stuff.  His lady fair not paying much attention.

The blueberries have flowered and set their fruit.  I have to fight the birds for it and have not found any way to increase my odds since they take the berries before they are fully ripe.  They don’t share very well me thinks.

Pansies (2)

My friend Pam gifted me with these  pansies and Johnny Jump Ups which are in full bloom. I love their cheerful spring faces and will be sorry when the heat of summer causes them to go.  But I understand as I will be going too at that point. Hopefully we will both be back in the fall.

May 5 (1)Thankfully during this unsettling time of pandemic at least one thing in my life stayed the same.  Happily that is my weekly book discussion with my friend Laurie.  No matter where I am, pandemic or not, we get together to discuss a book we’ve chosen.  That red thing is my phone with which I am taking this picture.

Two posts ago in ‘Right Through March’ (link above),  I mentioned we had just finished Late Migrations and now we are about to finish Life After Life by Kate Atkinson.   It’s a wildly inventive novel about Ursula Todd, born in 1910 and doomed to die and be reborn over and over again.   New beginnings one after another with slight twists on the life she is living.  Wonderfully constructed and serious food for thought.   What if????

And lastly, now that I am fully vaccinated, I’ve finally found someone who can deal with my heavy thick hair.  Thanks Marianne.  You did a great job on the cut.

Marianne

I’m still not sure which I like best.   Long has so many more possibilities – braids, pony tails, hair pinned up in numerous ways or down long.   Short is way easier especially washing and combing which I can do with my fingers now.  A big plus is that I don’t have so much long hair all over everything.    But I do miss my wavy locks.   Although they may not look like it, these pictures were taken within 2 days of each other.  Different location and lighting makes my long hair look less gray than it was around my face.

It’s spring and definitely a new beginning.

  2. I imagine that is what everyone is going to say Jeannie. But I actually miss my long hair. Thanks for the comment.

  3. First of all...love the beauty all around at the farm. Second...the short hair cut ROCKS!!! But you knew I would say that...but I mean it and I believe with traveling this summer you will enjoy of quick and easy it is:o))

    1. Thanks Nancy. I did know you would say that. Nearly every woman with short hair feels that way. Still, I really liked my long hair. Hope you guys are surviving the heat down there. Miss seeing you.

    2. I'm getting ready to get my long hair cut, and have mixed emotions about it. It's been growing for close to a year and a half, and I'll never get it that long again. Short will be so much easier to care for though.

  4. I'm sure you're going to get more comments about your haircut than the beautiful spring blooms :) To me spring always means changes for the better. I know I love keeping my hair short is so much handier and easier, and we're not even full timing anymore! I do love it as well as the spring flowers on the farm.

    1. Yes I think you are right about the comments even though the blooms are prettier than I am. :-) Thanks for the comment Laurie.

  5. I would miss that hair too, Sherry! Looks just like Lily Tomlin in Frankie and Grace. Still, I can see how easy the new cut would be for hot summer. If I still had that thick hair I might keep it...ah well, you look good either way. And the Flowers at the Farm! Wow. such a beautiful time of year to be there. I have only an acre so I can only imagine the work you have to deal with. Nice to have your book day with your friend no matter how you do it. Think I'll go look for that book.

    1. Now that I'm not here much Sue, the only things that are still around are those that require no care at all. At one point we had a lot of garden beds both vegetable and flower, bushes and trees. Thanks for your comment.

  6. Beautiful with hair both long or short. I know you miss the length, but I really think the short looks good on you and I know it must be so much easier. I don't have guts to go short even though I know it'd grow back! Enjoy the ease of it! Beautiful blooms in spring at the farm. Lovely seeing Laurie even if it is through a picture of a screen. I think it's wonderful that you all continue your book reading tradition no matter where you are!

    1. It's one of the high lights of my week. Would love to add a weekly or bi-weekly face time with you if you had any time. But I remember clearly those days of toddler and job when it seemed like there just were not enough hours in the day or week for everything that needed doing. AMLA

  7. Beautiful to see Spring fill the farm with new color - so, so pretty! I'm surprised the deer don't eat all the flowers, and glad that they don't :-) My long hair is so easy on the road and I never have to worry about finding a place I trust to get it cut again and again, but your short cut is so cute. I didn't realize your hair had gotten so long!!

    1. Sure would like to know how your long hair is easy on the road. Mine took forever to wash and there was hair everywhere. One of the reasons it grew so long was that I couldn't find anybody who could give me a decent haircut. How do you do it??

  8. I never have the nerve to go from so long to so short. It's always good to have a change. I love spring, so many beautiful flowers and everything fresh and green. Nice pics.

    1. I must admit that I was concerned about such a drastic cut but it will always grow out again. Glad you liked the pictures. I see they don't look as good and the spacing isn't right on a phone instead of a laptop. You must be at the beach now. Enjoy!

  9. Love the deer. The poor Tom Turkey! The girl turkey has even turned her back on him and he is trying so hard to impress her with his tail feathers. The iris and lovely. Pictures of the farm seem so peaceful. xxxooo

  10. I'm a smart man. I never comment on how a woman's hair looks. I learned that a long time ago and have survived because of it. ;c)

  11. Great shot of the turkeys. Miss all the wildlife and new beginnings of spring that we always experienced in Maryland.

  13. Spring has brought a whole new look to the farm, I love the Johnny Jumpups, and you looking sweet with a new haircut. When mine was long I thought of the things I could do with it but then it was almost always ponytail. I can't bring myself to go way short yet. I too have thick hair, but no waves, so many styles work.

  14. Short sure is easier especially if your hair is thick. Take a chance. It will always grow back. I'll bet you'd look great.

  15. It's been over a year since I had my hair cut and it is really long by now. I don't go out much though - even though I've been fully vacccinated for a while now. The trouble with getting it cut short is that I'd have to get frequent trims to keep it manageable.

  16. I suspect I'll just let it grow out again and when it gets too long I'll cut it back. I really do love not finding long hairs around all over the place. Glad to hear you got the vaccination.
