Moose River Campground Flat Tire Slows Trip
St. Johnsbury, Vermont
July only looked slightly different than June. My weeks often consist of two days of hiking and 2 days of kayaking. I hang around the river here over the week-end to let the workers have the lakes and trails.
I had a beautiful day on Keiser pond.
I went there for the 2nd time hoping to see the hatched baby loon. But no luck. The parents were there but not the baby. No idea what happened. It’s sad though.
Here’s some of the beauty I did see.
I heard well over a dozen birds but these two were the only ones I saw
Easter Phoebe
Red Winged black bird
One of the hikes I did this week was on the local Rail Trail. I used to carry a bicycle with me but I found I’d rather walk or hike than ride and getting the bike on and off the bike rack was too difficult for me alone. The nice thing about Rail Trails is that they are like interstate highways, wide and flat or with a gradual slope unlike the mountains of Vermont.
That’s not to say there is no slope.
Every Monday evening at 7:00 the St Johnsbury Band performs on the courthouse lawn and one of the local businesses provides free ice cream. It’s such a wonderful small town tradition. There were a lot more people than this picture shows but most of them were behind me or in the ice cream line.
Here’s the ice cream line. 3 flavors to choose from. 2 scoopers so the line will move along. 1 scoop per person but they are big scoops
My second kayak trip was to Lake Hardwick. The beginning is at the put in of course. Turns out Lake Hardwick has some sort of invasive water plant here at this end of the lake so you have to put in to it and head the other direction. You can sort of see it at the end of the ramp and further out in the lake.
Kind of a hazy day. I didn’t see much at all on or around the lake but the quiet beautiful environment was wonderful The Lamoille River is on the other end of the lake and turned out to be the best part of this paddle
I had just come around the bend into the river from the lake when I saw what looked like a telephone pole in the middle of a marsh.
A closer look revealed an osprey platform.
Complete with resident osprey.
Not sure you can see this clearly but I thought it was hilarious. As I was paddling back the 50 mph speed limit sign looked like it had been set for the river. Obviously at this spot the road is right there but still, It struck me as funny.
This handsome green heron was another highlight of my paddle.
There’s the stuff in the lake. Now all I have to do is get this kayak back on top of the car. I always wish I had a paddling buddy at this point.
Another thing that has become a dangerous weekly habit is a stop at the too near to the campground Milkhouse Ice Cream.
I could easily go there every day if I weren’t afraid of the consequences especially given that I also have ice cream at the band concert every Monday. Milkhouse doesn’t have only 3 flavors, it has dozens. Two big signboard lists of flavors. I didn’t count them but there are a lot. Wish I could sample every one before the summer is over…..well every one except the ones with coffee ice cream.
Here I am last week. Two scoops on a cone.
There is never not a line. I just love the cow!
And this week, two scoops in a cup. doesn’t it look like the cone scoops are bigger?? My mouth is watering just looking at these pictures.
Speaking of food.
I took myself out for breakfast this week to the Kitchen Counter in downtown St. Johnsbury.
I call this the farm breakfast because it’s what David used to make for us one day every week-end. His had the worlds most flakey made from scratch biscuits. I miss them and him.
The campground had a bingo game on the 4th of July. I LOVE bingo. Not the serious kind that costs a lot of money, but this kind at $1 for 3 cards. Last month I won 3 of the 9 games. YEA!!!
This month, for the first time since I’ve played at Moose River, I didn’t win one single game. Boo hoo!
There was also a char broiled roast beef dinner potluck on the 4th.
Carmen and Linda, two work campers, organize all the food people brought.
The right cake for this day.
Yes this all happened in one week. It didn’t make me tired at the time but retelling it did. I may have to increase the number of days I hike and kayak to keep up with all this eating and ice cream.
And you did all of this after/during a fight with a pesky cough! Ain’t no stopping you woman! 💪🏻
ReplyDeleteYes, Sherry is a power house!!!!
DeleteUnfortunately for me the cough is not over even though all the rest of it is
DeleteThat looks like a lot of fun, cool weather, and good food, and great animal sighting. Glad you had a good 4th of July.
ReplyDeleteTom
Thanks Tom. It's good to hear from you. It was a lot of fun. Hope you had a good 4th too!
DeleteWhat a lovely place! The campground we worked at in Montana did an ice cream social too. Loved socializing with fellow ice cream lovers. I'm not sure having that ice cream shop so close would be good! I'd be there every night!
ReplyDeleteThat's my problem too Laurie. I have to drive by that ice cream parlor anytime I go anywhere.
DeleteWell, Sherry, you have me so intrigued by the St. Johnsbury area that I have been looking at real estate just for fun! It sounds like the neatest little community. I can’t wait to visit that area one day!
ReplyDeleteI am so envious of your interaction with Nature and her wildlife! How glorious to wake up on a little river and be able to be right there in the midst of the natural world! I think if I were to have this experience for just a week, I would be hooked for life!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your adventures and allow me to travel to your world through this wonderful blog.
I am so happy that you are enjoying my posts sky and I appreciate your commenting to let me know. There must be some way you could get yourself a little RV and come on up here and spend the summer too.
DeleteAll of the things you do and places you see seem peaceful to me. The lily pad is very pretty. Of the bird pictures, I love then little green heron. There is an osprey platform in the sound here. The cow reminds me of when I was little and my parents took me to Barton's restaurant, where incidentally I worked as a waitress when I was starting college, and there was a big cow on the platform in front of the restaurant. I always had to pet him/her. I liked cows even back then! By the way, your hair looks great! xxxooo
ReplyDeleteI definitely do gravitate to peaceful places. Pam. Love the story of the cow in your life. Thanks for telling it. I'm glad you like my hair. I'm just sick of having bad haircuts so I haven't done anything but let it grow.
DeleteI can't even spell Binggoh correctly let alone play it...
ReplyDeleteYou are such a riot Paul. Your comments always make me smile. Thanks!!
DeleteLooks like fun, Sherry. My mother used to call your farm breakfast a "sawmill breakfast." No telling why. This is such a nice place to stay, and I enjoy hearing about it. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pam for such a nice comment. I'm really glad you enjoy hearing about this place because you're going to hear more about it until the end of August. I hope it doesn't get repetitive or boring
DeleteThose 2 big scoops on that small cone looked dangerous! The cup is definitely the better option so you don't drop any.....no one can lick that fast!! Hope your weather has been holding out....and no flooding predicted. talk to you soon..Mary on Mason
ReplyDeleteI'm a pretty fast licker Mary, so I may go back to the cone since it looked like more ice cream to me. No gluttony here. Hope you aren't steaming there. We've had rain but nothing severe. Thankfully.
DeleteYou're caught up! I almost missed this post it came so fast :-) I can hear the soft swish of the oar through that calm water, so lovely! Music in the park and a green heron, I continue to be envious of your wonderful summer. We're finally looking at a forecast without triple digits - some highs in the 80s even! Having a dairy bar that close would definitely be dangerous, but there are worse vices to have! Glad the cough isn't keeping you down and hope it finally moves on soon.
ReplyDeleteoops, tis me!
DeleteTrying to keep my promise to get up to date. This one is actually 8 days after the last one. I can't believe blogger made you anonymous. It's known you for years. Must be geriatric problems for the program. So glad to hear 80's coming for you. Abiquiu is in the 90's and up. How did O'Keeffe spend every summer there?
DeleteWere the 3 flavors at the concert series vanilla, chocolate and strawberry?! And, does the ice cream shop have anything close to or similar to 'Jamaica Me Crazy'? The lakes are beautiful and the routine sounds great, to include the weekly ice cream stop! Great place to spend the summer for sure!! I miss Dad and his biscuits too. I definitely have very fond memories of the farm breakfasts. Love you.
ReplyDeleteNo their ice cream at the band concerts is not vanilla chocolate and strawberry thankfully. I think this last time was butter pecan chocolate fudge ripple and I forget what the third one was. Sadly I have not seen any ice cream place that has any flavor like Jamaican me crazy. It's a sad sad situation. Love you too sweetheart and thank you for the comment. Always makes me smile to see your name in the comments.
