February’s End - Still Waiting

Day 174 & Counting                    January – It’s All About the Weather

I’m posting this on the 10th of March and as you will see, I’m feeling stuck but no matter what frustrations I have, it is nothing compared to the brave people of Ukraine.  I’m almost embarrassed to post this rather whining account.   How thankful I am that Vladimir Putin is not my neighbor.  Enough politics.   The other bad news is that Winnona is still waiting.  She’s in the shop which is backed up.  She’s taking turns with too many RVs with too many problems.  Supply chains are broken.  Or at least that’s what they tell me.  She’s waiting, I’m waiting.

It’s 6  months and counting since I returned to Virginia from Vermont thinking I was only staying 6 weeks and would be heading toward my hard fought for reservations in Florida where I would not be shoveling snow.  HA!  Little did I know.

February 15 temp
This is how the 2nd half of February started.  Yes that’s 17 outside and 64 inside.

Meanwhile, back in Silver Springs where I was this time last year it was 72 on this date this year.

17 or 72, hmmmm which would I rather have.

IMG_0305Some things I can count on regardless of place.  Mid month, the full moon shone brightly here in through the crisp cold leafless trees just as it has above the warm sands of the Atlantic in Februaries past.  It’s beautiful wherever I am.

I do feel like I’ve been marking time as I struggle to get the work done on Winnona and get her back home and fit for further adventures.   I thought I would have this puzzle completed before I wrote this post but it didn’t happen.  Here’s what I’ve done so far and what it is supposed to look like.  I find that I don’t have the patience to concentrate on much of anything but reading and keeping warm.  I am very tired of winter.

And of the lower back problems resulting from my excess of January shoveling.  In fact, as I am typing this my phone rings and it is my chiropractor wanting to know where I am when it is 15 minutes after my appointment time.  Writing my blog I tell her sheepishly.

I’m not at all sure why I got my hair cut except that it was falling down onto my forehead and requiring more “care” than I’m interested in but I like the “before” better than the “after” so I’m putting the pictures here to remind me that the cut was
TOO SHORT!

For the most part,  I am spending my hours reading, taking a daily walk of 3 or 4 miles and trying not to consume too many comfort inducing carbs like pastries, popcorn, potato chips and candy.   Eating lots of warming soups but somehow they don’t seem to comfort quite enough.

One thing nice about being stuck is that I can walk to the sweet little local library which is my very favorite place.  Its picture was also in my previous post.  In these days of consolidation and bigger is better I hold my breath hoping that my tiny library, and it is tiny, does not get replaced by something newer, bigger and less cozy.

On the way, it is fun to peek into people’s yards and look for signs of spring like these snow drops.

The houses in the neighborhoods I walk though are all unique and I love their dormers and colors.  I could post pictures of dozens but two will do.

This one had an interesting play spot though I happen to know there are no children living there. The owner is clearly having fun.

Among the other walking routes I take, one cuts through McIntire Park which on this day was looking very wintery.  But then it is February, I don’t know what I expect.

The leafless tree shapes show how they grow together, giving each other the room they need.  Don’t we wish people were as accommodating and generous.

One bright spring spot in all this brown and gray.

On one route, I go by several ‘little libraries’.  Four or Five actually.  These two are on the same street.   They make me smile when I walk by which is why I arrange my route to go by them all.  And of course I stop and see what’s up for loan.

Probably the best thing in the last half of February was my friend Laurie’s birthday which we were actually able to celebrate OUTSIDE on a freakish very warm day.  Hallelujah!!   We were finishing our discussion of Louise Erdrich’s The Round House and having lunch.

Laurie opens her present and card.

It’s the perfect thing for her.  A one person game called Cat Crimes.  Laurie is a veteran cat lady with two felines she serves named Kima and Twig.

Laurie sent me this picture of Detective Twig on the job solving the crime.

  1. There are 8 or so Little Libraries on MY former walking route — which I hope to resume once my foot issues are gone. Try to find more, my friend!

    1. Good to hear from you Diane. I know of several other little libraries but thought two was enough to show. Hope your foot issues are making progress.

  2. I, for one, love your haircut! Very flattering I think. Of course I love short hair, so much easier to handle. My Mom's daffodils are blooming here. Reminds me of her, and spring as well.

    1. Wonderful to have daffodils right in your yard. Such a lovely reminder of your mother.

  3. My hair hasn't been cut since before the start of the pandemic! I am finally booked for a visit with my hairdresser next Friday. I think I will miss it, in a way.

    1. Wow Gypsy, that's a long time. In some ways I think long hair is actually easier than short if you are willing to just pull it back in a clip. This cut is too short. But it will always grow out. Hope you like yours short.

  4. These are great little repositories for those of us who love books. I don't know of any around my area. I wonder how they are kept reliably dry during monsoon season.

    1. We don't have monsoon Judilyn but they seem to be well enough sealed and the books back inside far enough to avoid getting weather damaged. They are so much fun to look in and see what's there.

  5. The plight of the Ukranian people certainly makes any of our issues seem trivial. Even though impacted fuel prices may impact our upcoming travels I cannot find it in myself to complain. Can't believe you're at six months now though :-( Glad you have a safe and lovely haven and are staying healthy. Such lovely homes on your walk. Not something we have much of here in the wilds of Tombstone - no pretty homes or yards. But also no snow to shovel! You and your friends find the most wonderful and unique gifts for each other. Hang in there, hope warmer temps bring Winonna home as well.

    1. This war just makes me angry. All wars make me angry. So stupid. When are these men (mostly) going to grow up? No snow is a BIG PLUS in my mind though it is pretty when it comes down and fun to play in on the first day until you have to get your shovel out.

  7. 82 degrees at the STATE PARK Today. We went for an early hike and tested the air conditioning for the rest of the day. Very humidity and hot.

  8. 82 degrees at what park Tom? Sounds wonderful to me though a bit hot for early March unless you are down south in Florida.

  9. I'm so glad Laurie and Twig are enjoying Cat Crimes! I'll have to tell Jenn that her great gift choice was given again :) I love the little libraries and pretty photos from your walks. I, too, am tired of the cold. The daffodils here are sprouted with no flowers yet. Next week's weather looks promising. This weekend's weather ... no thank you ... come on Spring, we are ready! The waiting is hard, but it's so true that it's hard to complain given what's happening to others abroad right now. Shameful! I hope you were still able to see the chiropractor and your back remains on the mend!

    1. So glad you shared it with me. I'd like to play it too. Boy are we ready for spring but as you know, it is snowing today for both of us in mid March.

  10. Sorry to hear that Winnona is still waiting and you are missing out on your FL reservation. I hope things get resolved quickly for you. Teddy and I have less than 2 weeks here in AZ before head home to Ohio. Take care and Stay safe.

  11. Ahh the signs of spring.. happening here too in Texas although today started out at 50 degrees and now it's 42 degrees - not as cold as Virginia but unseasonably cold for us. But things are starting to turn green and this will likely be our last cold snap. So sorry your rig is still not fixed. We love cats too and have two. They bring us lots of pleasure (and work).

    1. Snowing here today AGAIN. I'm REALLY hoping this is it for winter but I'm not betting on it. I didn't realize you had two cats. I thought it was just the one you somehow got in over the border. :-)

  12. I know that you have been really frustrated waiting and waiting and being unable to make things happen. Winnona must be missing you. She has had a very hard time- hopefully she will be all fixed up soon so that you can get going. Even though you are kind of stuck, you still read, write and go for your walks even when it's cold or when you don't feel like it. You appreciate nature and any signs of spring. I think you hair looks good. What I notice from the before and after photos is not so much the length of the sides but the length in the back. It stinks when you get your hair done and you don't like it. Here's hoping for more nice days so we can go walking- xxxooo

  13. Cat Crimes? What a funny game that must be. Does one have to have a cat to play it? I don't have a cat so I feel left out. :cD

    1. No cat necessary and it's a solo person game so you don't have to even have another person. My daughter has it so I'm hoping I can try it when I see her next.

  14. I'm chilled to the bone reading that and probably wouldn't go out to see the moon in those temps. I like your hair a little longer, where it will be again soon. Very nice to have a library within walking distance and bonus the minis. I know it's been a rough winter, but flowers mean spring and warmer, wetter, weather.

    1. I think you are the only one willing to admit you agree with me that the haircut is too short. Thanks! I thought we were going straight to spring but it's snowing today in near mid March. SIGH! A friend says to be happy about that since otherwise we'd have 2 weeks of spring and go straight into stifling hot and horribly humid.

  15. Oh, Sherry...at least we've had and will have some crazy warm days. I'm looking out at the snow falling right now after yesterday's weather when I sat outside in the beautiful sunshine at a vineyard with friends. I hate that it's taking so long to fix Winnona, but appreciate your attitude. I agree. I have had a very challenging month, but I am not living in a bomb shelter or running for my life. Hang in. I love your pictures.

  16. I cannot believe I almost forgot to comment! I think it's because we were chatting that very day. I enjoy reading about all of the tiny things that you're finding to keep you happy. Little libraries, books, spring flowers beginning to bloom...you sound as peaceful and accepting as you can possibly be. Hugs to you, my friend.

  17. I am going to sit on the fence with the haircut. Either one is very nice, and you look lovely. Now if you were comparing your older photos with your very long hair, I would have had to have an opinion, although I am not sure which it would be. These two haircuts are pretty darn close, and either way, in a week it won't matter. Nice that you are finding ways to fill your days, especially nice to have a friend to talk books with, and your walks look delightful. One thing about our Grants Pass home is that our walking is limited to a half mile down the street unless we are willing to drive somewhere, which I am not often inclined to do. I am lucky to get half a mile now, and do so miss my long 4 or 5 miles walks that I did almost daily until this "thing" hit me in 2019. Hardest part is that it came on so suddenly. I treasure the ability to still walk, to still stand in the shower, to get out of bed, to put on my pants one leg at a time. All it takes is reading some of the trials fellow IBMrs have on the IBM groups to be incredibly grateful...until I read about people I care about who can still walk the way I did in the old days. We have little things blooming here, the daffs are almost open, the pansies are colorful and the grass is incredibly green. March can drag out but it is somehow different. Very little fog, some rain, some sun, always a bit chilly except for surprise moments. I am filling the days as you are with warm soups, trying to avoid the carbs, quilting little silly things, making cards, doing puzzles, and trying to deal with the news. Mo watches the news a lot, and I feel like I do when passing an accident. Look, don't look, don't look, oh dang, I looked. Take care. The world is scary. Hope Winona is fixed soon.

  18. The world is scary Sue and I just keep wondering why do we do these things to each other. I know what you mean about trying to be grateful for what you have and no envious of those who have or can do more. Thank you for a wonderful comment. It was a joy to read.

  19. I'm so sorry that Winona hasn't been fixed yet. I hope it happens soon. I have been quiet for a very long time because I have been ill. I empathise with your hair woes - my chemotherapy makes your hair fall out. I knew it would happen so I cut it short to lessen the impact. I hated it! Not to keen on the wig they've given me either, but I'm quite enjoying experimenting with headscarves and bandanas! Here in the UK, or at least my part of it, the snowdrops have been and gone, daffodils and primroses are out in full force and there is a hint of green to the trees.

    1. Michele my hair woes are obviously nothing to yours. I can't imagine wearing a wig. Please keep us posted on your progress. Glad spring has reached you. For me, it is easier to be optimistic in the spring. Thanks so very much for your comment. I am so happy you are following along.

  20. So sorry to hear Winnona is still waiting...I looked up The Round House and I have read it too! Enjoy books about native cultures. Also enjoyed Hell of a Book, it is about race relations written in a very creative way. Now I am on to The Maid, and I am liking it so far! Dave and I move to skidaway Island next for our final stop before heading home. Have enjoyed the inter coastal area. Happy spring friend!

    1. Lynn, I love to see you in the comments! It's great to have other book lovers especially those who will recommend things they've read. I know what you mean about reading so much you can't put the story with the title of things you've read in the past that someone mentions. Loved Skidaway Island. Seems like a great place to be for Spring Equinox. Any chance we could meet up next winter??

    2. I 5hink we will be heading to Arizona and Texas, I will keep watching to see where Whinona will be taking you!

  21. I am so sorry to read your still without Winnona. It's sounds like you've found ways to fill your days. While our book tastes differ, I too have found much enjoyment this winter in reading. A probable torn meniscus has prohibited the hiking I hoped to do this winter. Small woes compared to the craziness in the world these days. I had my hair cut for the first time in almost 2 years, no real change just dead ends cut, but they say I should do it a little more often. Hoping spring soon arrives for you.
